Our Story – Family Owned Compost Supplier Central Texas

Mike's Lone Star Materials didn't start with investors or a polished business plan. It started with dirt, trucks, and a decision to do things the right way.

Mike spent years hauling materials for someone else, working in and around the industry across Texas and learning firsthand what customers needed and where the industry was falling short. He was the guy on the ground – delivering loads to landscape yards, contractors, and job sites – and that experience gave him a level of knowledge no classroom could.

Then came the words that changed everything.

"If you can figure out how to compost cotton burr the right way, I'll buy every bit of it."

That was all Mike needed to hear. He secured family land in McDade, Texas and started building compost piles from raw cotton burr sourced straight from the gin – no formal roadmap, no one handing him the process. For over a year he monitored moisture, temperature, and breakdown, figuring out through trial and error what it actually took to turn raw organic material into compost that performed in the field. That hands-on beginning is how Lone Star Materials was born, and it still defines how the company operates today.

Built For Central Texas – Built To Last

After more than 30 years in this business, one thing has become clear: volume is easy, quality takes discipline.

Lone Star was built around performance and consistency. We focus on true composting practices, clean and natural inputs, and performance-driven soil blends – not filler blends, trend-driven shortcuts, or municipal sludge. No wastewater compost. No unnecessary fillers. When contractors are managing large-scale projects and homeowners are investing in their property, the material has to perform. That standard doesn't change based on market conditions or what's convenient.

Family-Built. Owner-Operated

More than three decades later, Lone Star remains owner-operated and rooted in Central Texas. We serve contractors, landscapers, nurseries, and homeowners who value straightforward pricing, reliable supply, and material that does what it's supposed to do.

The industry has changed a lot since Mike started. Our standards haven't.
